Rebates & Tax Credits for Solar Systems

A number of state and local rebates and federal tax credits are available to homeowners when they purchase equipment that increases the energy efficiency of their home.

State Rebates

The California Solar Initiative Program is a state-subsidized rebate program which helps homeowners purchase rooftop solar systems. Rebate savings for each customer will vary, depending on the type of equipment purchased and how much rebate money is available.

The State of California also offers rebates on upgraded heating and air conditioning systems and energy-efficient windows and doors, depending on the type of equipment purchased. UCS will help connect you with the right rebates to get you the maximum savings on your energy-efficient equipment.

Federal Tax Credits

Through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Home Energy Efficiency Improvement program, homeowners who purchase and install solar systems are eligible for a tax credit of up to $2,000.

The federal government also provides tax credits of up to $300 for homeowners who install high efficiency HVAC systems, and up to $200 for dual-pane exterior windows and doors.

Utility Districts and Energy Providers

SMUD and PG&E both offer rebates on energy-efficient heating and air conditioning systems and solar systems.

PG&E customers, through the district’s Energy Efficiency Rebates for Your Home program, can save $300-$600 in rebates for high efficiency air conditioners.

Homeowners living in SMUD’s service area can receive rebates of $400-$500 for energy-efficient HVAC systems through SMUD’s Residential Rebates program. In addition, SMUD offers a rebate on home solar systems of $2.50 per watt, based on system performance (orientation, array, tilt, and shade).
